CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — Police are investigating a firearms incident in Christchurch’s Shirley suburb after a man was taken to hospital following an emergency response near the intersection of Marshland Road and Hercules Street.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026, according to reporting by 1News and Radio New Zealand. Although searches for a Christchurch shooting today have drawn attention to the incident, the reported shooting occurred the previous day.

Senior Sergeant Christopher Wakelin said police were conducting initial inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities indicated that they did not believe there was a threat to public safety at that stage.

Hato Hone St John confirmed that an ambulance, an operations manager and a rapid response unit attended the scene. Emergency medical personnel treated one patient before transporting the man to Christchurch Hospital.

Reports differed in their descriptions of the man’s condition, with 1News initially reporting that he was in moderate condition, while a subsequent report carried by the Otago Daily Times said he had been seriously injured.

The circumstances leading to the firearms incident have not been fully explained in the available reports. Police have not publicly confirmed a suspect, an arrest or a motive in the information reviewed.

Christchurch Police Investigation Continues

The investigation comes amid heightened public attention following several serious incidents in Christchurch in recent weeks.

On October 10, police launched a homicide investigation after two people died and two others sustained serious injuries in an incident at an address on Olliviers Road in Phillipstown. Two people were taken into custody to assist with inquiries. Police said they believed that incident was isolated and that there was no wider risk to public safety.

Authorities have not established a connection between the Phillipstown deaths and the separate Shirley firearms incident.

Residents seeking further information should monitor official New Zealand Police updates for confirmed developments.
